Baby Cakes

June 22nd, 2014

baby shower cupcakes

I have to confess it’s been a while since I wrote a blog post on here. I’ve still been baking, but I’ve been terrible at keeping my website up to date. Naughty me. Last year I was made editor for Homemaker magazine and so everything has been very busy and hectic in my life. I still squeeze in regular orders so please do get in touch. I hope you like these baby shower cupcakes that I made last week. The lucky lady doesn’t know if she’s having a boy or a girl, so I went for a mixed theme of blue and pink. I chose strawberry flavour for the sponge and swirled rich vanilla buttercream on top. Delish!

Pretty Peacock

Peacock Cupcake

When I was asked to create a peacock cupcake, I was really excited – I’d never made anything like it before! I made the little heads from modelling paste, adorned them with glitter and piped their feathers with buttercream. It was really fun experimenting with different piping techniques. In the end I opted for a leaf design to resemble the feather plume and I think they looked pretty fab. I also baked some plain vanilla cakes with crisp white icing, which were decorated with a real peacock feather. Arranged neatly around the base of a beautiful wedding tower, they looked fantastic. The bride and groom were really pleased and loved them! If you’d like cupcakes for your wedding day, please do get in touch!

English Rose

Wedding Rose Cupcakes

It’s been a busy few months. It’s wedding season, so I’ve had a number of large orders to complete. One bride requested a tower of white and pink rose cupcakes; each one delicately piped to resemble a beautiful English rose and adorned with a soft green leaf. The cupcakes were finished with pretty filigree, lace-cut wrappers and on top of the tower stood a pure white cutting cake adorned with pastel pink ribbon. It looked divine, if I do say so myself! Working closely with the bride meant everything colour-coordinated with her theme and it looked perfect. If you need a wedding cake designed for your big day, please get in touch.

Sofa Cake

I don’t usually make celebration cakes – I’m a cupcake baker, of course. Although, when I was approached to make a sofa cake, I just knew I had to give it a go. I’d never attempted anything like it, and knew it’d be a new challenge for me. I was instructed that the cake had to be a man sitting on a sofa, playing FIFA on his Playstation 3, and surrounded by all his favourite vices – beer, lads’ mags and fags! A far cry from the usual butterflies, hearts and flowers that I’m more accustomed to modelling. I, however, absolutely loved every minute I spent making it. The cake was also accompanied with chocolate ‘30’ cupcakes which sat around the sofa cake. I’ve been told, much to my delight, that the recipient loved it so much that he won’t cut it and has wrapped it up securely to keep forever! If you’d like a sofa cake, or similar, then do get in touch!

What a Treat!

Jam Jar Cupcakes

Well what a week it has been. Lots of celebrations and parties for the Jubilee meant plenty of cupcakes in red, white and blue for Bettie Bakes. A very exciting trip to Jimmy’s Farm saw a win for us with our jam jar cupcakes. Jimmy Doherty hosted a cupcake competition as part of his Best of British village fete and chose our jam jar treats as a winning combination! Jimmy loved our chocolate orange delights so much that he chose us runner up for the contest. We’ll be adding them to our menu very soon, so stay tuned!

Summer Garden

Summer Garden Cupcakes

Finally! The sunshine is coming through the clouds. Hurrah, no more rain! The sunny weather certainly put me in the mood this weekend and to celebrate I thought I’d make a batch of flowery garden-themed cupcakes. With teeny bumble bees, toadstools and pretty daisies this bunch of yummy treats is just divine.

In other news, I’ve been busy booking up craft shows, wedding fairs and festivals for the summer months. So come to some of the events I’m signed up to and get yourself a cupcake (or three!). First on the agenda is the I Make Fun Stuff Summer Market on Sunday 24th June in Ipswich. You’ll find me on St. Peter’s Street from 10am. See you there!

Valentines Cupcakes

Love certainly is in the air this month. Family, friends, and myself included, are all falling head over heels in love with my new strawberry-filled cupcakes. Especially designed for Saint Valentine’s Day, the delicious We’re Jammin’ variety, in all its vanilla sponge and jam-filled glory, is utterly divine. Especially when each is topped with lashings of red and white vanilla buttercream and finished with wonderfully romantic embellishments. Don’t mind if I do…

Bettie's story

Simply put, I am obsessed with baking. It's not a secret, I adore cupcakes and can't get enough of chocolate sprinkles, sweet icings and lashings of buttercream. Nothing beats a springy sponge
cake topped with swirls of rosy pink frosting. Except when it's accompanied with a cup of tea,
of course!

from dreams to reality

If there's anyone to thank for my love of all things sweet, it has to be my mum. Never has a meal time passed without the all-important 'afters', or a celebration gone by without a grand cake, because my lovely mum used to be a professional cake decorator, which meant I grew up surrounded by cake.bettie may Handmade sugar flowers frequently lined the sideboard, little marzipan fruits could be found in the lounge along with intricately modelled figurines nestled away and out of reach. Our house smelled glorious, always. If my mum's passion for cakes hadn't rubbed off on me, something would have been seriously wrong. So, here we are, all these years later, and I'm completely and utterly evangelical about cake. The cupcake kind more specifically. Much to the satisfaction of my friends and family I started Bettie Bakes in 2010, for one simple reason, to share my love of cake with my nearest and dearest. And now, with the launch of the new website, I can share my passion for baking with you too. Bettie xx

Did you know?

The first mention of the cupcake can be traced as far back as 1796, when a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery by Amelia Simms.
